CCI–Ekaterinburg
The CCI-Ekaterinburg office, established in 1994 and directed
by Lena Novomeiskaya, has 12 people on staff. The Ekaterinburg office
recruits and prepares delegates for CCI’s Productivity Enhancement
Program (PEP) and assists with other programs, such as the CCI Leaders
Institute and the Schultz Awards. They also manage satellite operations,
which identify and prepare PEP candidates in the large and diverse
regions of the Ural Mountains and Siberia.
Since it opened, the Ekaterinburg office has implemented several
CCI programs, including the Economic Development Program, Presidential
Management Training Initiative and Consulting Services for Russian
Entrepreneurs. In addition, the office provides independent services
for its community and region, including English language courses
for students and professionals, business internships in Great Britain,
student exchanges abroad and various business seminars and conferences.
Ekaterinburg (pop. 1.5 million) is the capital of the Sverdlovsk
region and is considered to be the capital of the Urals, a large
mountainous area between western Russia and Siberia. Often referred
to as the city where Asia and Europe meet, it was established almost
300 years ago by Peter the Great to be a major industrial and administrative
center for the region. Ekaterinburg also serves as a major cultural
center. There are over 15 institutions of higher learning in the
city, including the Ural branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
It is a major trade and financial hub with a stock exchange and
four commodity exchanges, but is probably best known for its metallurgical,
machinery and chemicals manufacturing.
During the Soviet period, the city was renamed Sverdlovsk after
the first president of the Soviet Union, Yakov Sverdlov; in 1991,
the city returned to its original name. Since the 1990s, Ekaterinburg
has seen significant foreign investment from Great Britain, Finland,
Austria, the U.S. and other countries, and a U.S. Consulate was
opened there in 1994.
