CCI–Rostov-on-Don

The CCI office in Rostov-on-Don opened in 1994 and is directed by Andrei Skorik. With six staff members, the office represents CCI in several regions in the South extending from the Rostov oblast to the Black Sea and to the southern border of Russia. The Rostov office recruits and prepares delegates for CCI’s Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP) and assists with other programs, such as the CCI Leaders Institute. They also manage satellite operations, which identify and prepare PEP candidates from across southern Russia.

Originally the Rostov office was developed to recruit candidates for CCI’s Economic Development Program, and has since then played a key role in implementing other CCI programs, including the Presidential Management Training Initiative. The Rostov office also took an active part in establishing the first Rotary Club in the city as well as the local chapter of OPORA, a national business and entrepreneur association.

Rostov-on-Don (pop. 1.2 million) is the capital of the Rostov Region and the unofficial center of the Don River area. The city is located on the bank of the Don River, east of the Sea of Azov, which puts it at the crossroads of Ukraine, Russia’s Volga region, Siberia, the northern Caucasus and Transcaucasia. Established originally as a fort, bordering the Turkish Empire, the city was incorporated in 1749 and quickly became a major trading route along the Sea of Azov, which connects the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Rostov continued to expand, becoming a regional industrial and agricultural center and a major port in southern Russia. The 100-km-long Volga-Don Canal, completed in 1952, links the Don and the Volga Rivers near Volgograd and connects Rostov to five seas, earning it the name, “Gateway to the Caucasus.”

Today, Rostov is a leading producer of agricultural machinery as well as home to a major university and other research institutes. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, many industrial enterprises have been privatized and new and smaller companies, shops and private schools have started up creating a modern, thriving city.
