CCI–Vladivostok
The city of Vladivostok is home to CCI’s most recently developed
office, which is directed by Evgenia Terekhova. The office was chosen
in 1998 to help CCI expand the Productivity Enhancement Program
(PEP) into the vibrant and expansive Russia Far East. With a staff
of only three and working partly out of the local branch of the
Russian Academy of Sciences, the Vladivostok office represents the
entire Far East region along the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan
and west to Lake Baikal in Siberia. Focusing on PEP, the office
recruits candidates from its vast region and prepares them for travel
to the U.S.
In addition to her work with CCI, Evgenia Terekhova is also the
Chair of the Foreign Languages Department at the Russian Academy
of Sciences. She participates very actively as a member and officer
of the Vlad-Echo Rotary Club and travels widely as a translator
and interpreter for many international seminars and conferences.
Vladivostok (pop. 650,000) is nestled among glittering bays on
the Pacific Ocean, not far from China and North Korea. A growing
city, Vladivostok is working to become an important industrial,
shipping and trade city with its deep-water ports and terminus for
the Trans-Siberian Railway. Several countries, including the U.S.
have developed consulates in the city.
Vladivostok was founded as a military outpost in 1860, when the
region passed from China to Russia; the presence of Russian power
in the region was reflected in the city’s name, which means
“ruler of the east.” Vladivostok has been a natural
link between the East and European Russia, but during the Soviet
era became a closed, fortress city and home to the Soviet Pacific
Fleet. The city remained closed to both Soviets and foreigners until
1992.
The city is located some 9,000 miles from Moscow — seven
days by train and seven time zones away. As a result, the region
has begun to develop somewhat independently from the “center”
and has looked to cultivate ties with its neighbors and abroad.
