CCI–Voronezh
The CCI Voronezh office opened in 1995 and is directed by Nellie
Schukina. With four staff members, the office represents an area
known as the “Black Soil” region and surrounding territories
to the south of Moscow. The Voronezh office recruits and prepares
delegates for CCI’s Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP)
and assists with other programs, such as the CCI Leaders Institute
and the Schultz Awards. They also manage satellite operations, which
identify and prepare PEP candidates from their densely populated
region.
Over the years, the Voronezh office has implemented several CCI
programs, including the Economic Development Program, Presidential
Management Training Institute and Consulting Services for Russian
Entrepreneurs.
Voronezh (pop. 1 million) is located over 300 miles south of Moscow
and is the capital of its district and the unofficial capital of
the Chernozem “Black Soil” region, named after the rich
arable soil of this area. It is situated along the Don River at
the intersection of transport routes connecting many parts of Russia.
Founded in 1586 as a fort along Russia’s southern border,
the fertile soil, rich forests and deep rivers, attracted settlements
referring to the name “Voronezh” as early as the 12th
century. When Peter the Great chose Voronezh as a building site
for the first Russian Navy, the city emerged as an industrial, economic
and trading center.
The region has seen its share of war, from fierce fighting during
the Russian Revolution and Civil War (1917-1920), to bitter fighting
during World War II, when the German army destroyed over 90 percent
of the city. Due to strong reconstruction efforts and rapid economic
growth, the majority of Voronezh was restored by the 1950s and continued
to develop well after.
Today Voronezh’s advantageous location, favorable climate,
fertile soil and other resources provide a basis for industrial
and agricultural growth and development. Voronezh’s key industries
are engineering, metallurgy, metal manufacturing and chemical and
food production. Many old buildings have been restored, and new
banks, cafes and office buildings have been erected throughout the
city.
