Program ActionsNext Steps: Transition to Transparency CCI has created a bold, out-of-the-box initiative that is desperately needed in Russia and perfectly timed for 2004. The Next Steps program strategy for 2004 is to inform and educate Russia's entrepreneurs regarding the world's best practices in corruption reduction and broadcast the information across Russia's 89 regions via the CCI Russia website. This site is dedicated to supporting Russia's entrepreneurs and making positive changes in Russia's small business environment. CCI believes that Next Steps' program activities will become like a laser beam targeted directly on corrupt practices at the most propitious time - and that this will stimulate an outburst of activity and innovative models to offset the obstructive practices developed during Russia's transition to a market economy. Corruption Reduction Events, March - April 2004 In March 2004, 100 carefully selected PEP alumni traveled to Washington D.C., at their own expense, to study the world's experience in corruption reduction. Relevant and adaptable information will be summarized and turned into a Recommendations to the President document. They then brought this information back to the Kremlin, stimulating debate across Russia, and beginning to integrate the best practices in their regions, cities and businesses. Corruption Reduction Events, June 2004 A Corruption Reduction Conference was held in Moscow, June 11-13, as a follow-up to the Symposium on Corruption Reduction held in Washington, D.C. and Moscow, March 2004. The initial symposium was a fact-finding mission to learn the world's experience in corruption reduction to take back to Russia. The purpose of this conference was to hear the results of what participants had initiated in their regions as a result of the symposium, create a strategy for grassroots action, and build an association to address honest business practices. Ongoing Corruption Reduction Events The next stages of Next Steps will be accomplished through email and the CCI Russia website. Relevant information, ideas, and new experiments with corruption reduction will be posted weekly for use by entrepreneurs and citizens all across Russia. Past Corruption Reduction Events In September of 2002, CCI organized the Entrepreneurs–Leaders of Russia Conference in St. Petersburg to probe the roots of public corruption and provide regional entrepreneurs with tools to defeat corrupt practices. The conference initiated a process to identify, inventory, monitor and report a myriad of absurd regulations and conflicting laws that impede the development of Russia’s small and medium-sized business sector. |
